IPPF-FIPP mourns the death of a Member

Sergio García Ramírez (1938-2024)

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Associate Member for Mexico, Sergio García Ramírez at the age of 85, which occurred on January 10th 2024. Sergio, a beloved and respected member of our community, has left an indelible legacy as a jurist and academic in Mexico.

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Sergio joined the Associate Committee of our Foundation in 2007 and distinguished himself as a professor emeritus at the Autonomous University of Mexico. His professional journey was extraordinary, marked by notable academic achievements, including the honor of receiving several honorary doctorates from renowned academic institutions. His contribution to jurisprudence reached its zenith with the presidency of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

From his youth, Sergio demonstrated a profound inclination for criminal and penitentiary affairs. His illustrious career included the directorship of the renowned Penitentiary of Mexico City and the modern Penitentiary Center of the State of Mexico. During the 1960s and 1970s, he spearheaded prison reform in Mexico, incorporating the principles of the Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners into Mexican legislation.

Among his more than 50 books, a significant portion addressed criminal and penitentiary issues, solidifying him as an expert in the field. He actively participated in various United Nations Congresses on crime prevention and offender treatment, leaving his mark on the international stage.

The community deeply mourns the loss of such an exceptional individual as Sergio. His legacy will endure in the memories of those privileged to know him, and his positive impact on society will be remembered with gratitude. We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
